Green Tip of the Week for 13 May 2012

Are you spring cleaning your garage or basement?  Dipose of old oil-based paints, pesticides and automotive fluids through your community's Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Program.

Solid Waste Management Plan Update

The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District and the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste Policy Committee has prepared an update to the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste Management Plan. This Plan Update will be submitted to all communities in Cuyahoga County in late August for approval.  The Plan can be viewed at the District office or online.

Adult education seminars in 2012

This year, the District is offering many free, interactive seminars to Cuyahoga County residents.  Join us to learn about composting, managing household hazardous waste, and starting a recycling program at work.  Registration is required.

"Clean Up, Green Up: Removing Home-Based Hazardous Materials" will be held on September 12 (Beachwood) and October 9 (Euclid).  This year, "Clean Up, Green Up" seminars have already been held in Fairview Park and Parma.





Compost Seminars & Bin Sales will be held May 16 (Bay Village),  June 12 (Cleveland), June 26 (Garfield Heights),  July 17 (Lakewood),  August 22 (Lyndhurst),  September 20 (Middleburg Heights) and  October 4 (Solon).


Waste & Recycling $ense for your Workplace
sessions will be held at the District offices in Garfield Heights on May 22June 27 and September 20.


August is Recycle Your Computer Month

August is Recycle Your Computer Month in Cuyahoga County. Unwanted computer equipment and cell phones are being collected by over 40 city service departments from August 1-31.

District representative Cristie Snyder talked to WTAM 1100's Bill Wills on April 12 about Recycle Your Computer Month.  Listen to the interview.

District awards grants to communities, schools, and non-profits

In March, the District awarded a total $120,997 in Community Recycling Awareness Grants to thirty-five communities for recycling awareness and education.  Since this grant was started in 2007, over $490,000 grants have been provided to 56 communities in Cuyahoga County.

The District also awarded $40,845 in Recycling Container Grants to tweny-nine local schools and non-profits to purchase recycling or compost bins.  Since 2009, the District has awarded $78,000 in Recycling Container Grants to 83 non-proft organizations and schools in Cuyahoga County.

Project Recycle 2012

Cuyahoga County schools participated in Project Recycle 2012 where ten schools with nearly 5,000 students collected 6,412 pounds of clothing.  Goodwill Industries supplied the bins and clothing collection and the Solid Waste District sponsored the prize.  To view what all the schools collected, see contest page

Congratulations to Incarnate Word Academy in Parma Heights for collecting 3.73 pounds of clothing per student.  They watched an environmental variety show by the Illusion Maker called the Wild and Wonderful Workshop.  

3 R's Photo Contest

Students entered twenty-four digital photographs for the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Photo Contest.  Over 80 people voted on their favorite entry for each age group and the winning photos stood out.   At a reception for all participants, the winners were reveled.     

Congratulations to Van Weinmann, Birchwood School; Mrs. Geoden's class, Thoreau Park Elementary; and Nicole Fiorelli.  each of them received a variety of prizes including a digital photo frame and their artwork as a poster.  To view the winning photos, click on the contest page
